Ushitakisan Daitokuji Temple: Scenic Autumn Leaves and Local Cafe Experience

Parks & Nature

Osaka is home to many hidden gems, and Ushitakisan Daitokuji Temple is undoubtedly one of the most stunning spots for autumn foliage. Typically reaching its peak from mid to late November, it offers a serene escape with vibrant maples and historic waterfalls.

In this guide, I will share my firsthand experience visiting on Saturday, November 29, 2025. Whether you are wondering about the current trail conditions, bus access, or the best photo spots, this detailed report has you covered.

Autumn Leaves Report: A Walk Through Daitokuji Temple

My journey began with a 50-minute Nankai bus ride from Kishiwada Station. The moment you arrive at the Ushitakisan bus stop, the crisp mountain air and the hint of autumn colors immediately set the mood.

The Walking Route

The course is straightforward but rewarding. My plan was: Main Gate → Tahōtō Pagoda → Ichinotaki Waterfall → Kinryū Waterfall, and then returning the same way.

Nature’s Red Carpet

On the path to the temple, I was greeted by a breathtaking carpet of fallen leaves. While the leaves on the trees were beautiful, the soft, vibrant red layer on the ground felt like walking through a fairytale.

The Historic Entrance Gate

The temple gate (Sanmon) framed by green, yellow, and red foliage creates a mystical atmosphere. Note: The gate is open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, so don’t arrive too late!

The Iconic Tahōtō Pagoda: Golden vs. Red

The Tahōtō Pagoda is the soul of Ushitakisan. Depending on where you stand, the view changes completely.

  • The Back Side: In the morning sun, the ginkgo trees shine like pure gold, illuminating the pagoda.
  • The Front Side: Here, the deep red maples drape over the structure, offering the quintessential “Japanese Autumn” photo.

Chasing Waterfalls: From Ichinotaki to Kinryū

The sound of rushing water adds a peaceful soundtrack to your hike. Ichinotaki is easily accessible, but the journey to Kinryū Waterfall requires a bit more effort.

Warning: The trail to Kinryū Waterfall is steep with uneven stone steps. It is not recommended for small children or those with mobility issues. It takes about 10 minutes of steady climbing from Ichinotaki.

Visitor Tips: Restrooms & Cafes

Restrooms: There is only one public restroom along the path from the bus stop to the waterfalls. Make sure to use it before you start your temple visit.

Dining: If you’re looking for a break, visit “Oyasumidokoro Kicchan.” This local cafe offers a cozy, home-like atmosphere. If you’re traveling solo and feel shy about going inside, they also offer takeout curry which you can enjoy on their wooden deck.

  • Hours: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Closed: Thursdays
