Located in the heart of Nagai Park, Nagai Botanical Garden is a stunning natural oasis featuring approximately 1,000 species and 120,000 plants. It is one of Osaka’s most beloved spots for experiencing the changing seasons. During my recent autumn visit, I was captivated by the vibrant Cosmos Fair, an annual event held from October to late November. In this guide, I’ll share the highlights of the garden’s autumn transformation and some practical tips for your visit.
Top Highlights: Autumn Colors and Seasonal Blooms
Autumn at Nagai Botanical Garden isn’t just about the leaves; it’s a symphony of textures and colors. Here are the spots you shouldn’t miss.
1. The Golden Tunnel of Bald Cypress Trees
Immediately upon entering, you are greeted by a magnificent avenue of bald cypress trees. During the peak of autumn, these trees form a vivid “leaf tunnel.” The transition from golden yellow to deep orange creates a perfect backdrop for photography.

2. The Central Pond & Ichimonji Bridge
The garden centers around a massive pond that acts as a mirror for the autumn foliage. Crossing the light blue Ichimonji Bridge provides the best panoramic views. From the center of the bridge, you can see the fountain and the colorful reflection of trees dancing on the water’s surface.

3. The Rose Garden and Dahlia Beds
While many associate roses with spring, the Autumn Rose Garden is equally enchanting. The blooms are known for their deep fragrance and concentrated colors. Additionally, the dahlia beds offer a striking variety of shapes.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye out for the Emperor Dahlias (Tree Dahlias). These giants can grow over 3 meters tall and bloom later than standard dahlias, typically starting in mid-November.

The Cosmos Fair: A Sea of Flowers
The highlight of the season is undoubtedly the Cosmos Fair. The garden transforms into a vast field of pink, white, and purple. Winding paths allow you to walk right into the middle of the flower beds, making it feel like you’re immersed in a floral ocean.

Garden Eats: Food Trucks & Snacks
After a long walk, you can recharge at the food trucks located near the entrance. They offer seasonal treats and light meals that you can enjoy at the nearby benches.
- Crepe Truck: Features over six varieties. The Caramel Banana Cream is a local favorite.
- Coffee & Hot Sandwich Truck: Highly recommended for coffee enthusiasts as they serve hand-dripped coffee. The ham and cheese hot sandwich (approx. 450 yen) is a perfect savory snack.
