Hidden Autumn Foliage in Osaka: Kema Sakuranomiya Park Along the Okawa River

Parks & Nature

Kema Sakuranomiya Park in Osaka is widely renowned as one of Japan’s premier cherry blossom destinations. While most visitors flock here in spring to see the 4,800 Somei Yoshino trees in full bloom, there is a “hidden season” that locals love: the autumn cherry foliage (Sakura Momiji).

On November 23rd, I took a late-afternoon stroll along the Okawa River to capture the deep crimson hues of the cherry leaves. In this guide, I’ll share my recommended walking route, the best photo spots for capturing Osaka Castle, and practical tips for your visit.

Recommended Walking Route: A Scenic Loop

Kema Sakuranomiya Park is a massive riverside park stretching several kilometers. For a satisfying 1-hour autumn walk, I recommend focusing on the Sakuranomiya Park area (marked in red on the map).

  • Start: South side of Genpachi Bridge (near JR Sakuranomiya Station).
  • Path: Head west along the riverside → Pass under Sakuranomiya Bridge → Cross Kawasaki Bridge.
  • Finish: Return via the opposite bank and cross back over Genpachi Bridge.

Starting Point: Descending to the Riverside

To begin your walk, take the stairs located on the south side of Genpachi Bridge. As soon as you reach the lower level, you are greeted by a tunnel of trees. Even before reaching the main river path, the small bridges and surrounding cherry trees offer a quiet, picturesque atmosphere.

Best Photo Spots: Autumn Cherry Foliage & Cityscapes

1. The Riverside Walking Path

The main path along the Okawa River is lined with cherry trees on both sides. Unlike maple trees that turn bright orange or yellow, cherry leaves often turn a deep, moody crimson. By late November, you can enjoy the contrast between the remaining leaves and the fallen ones carpeting the path.

2. Sakuranomiya Bridge and Sunlight

One of the most artistic views is looking toward the Sakuranomiya Bridge (Silver Bridge). During my visit around 2:30 PM, the sun began to dip, creating a beautiful backlighting effect through the leaves.

3. View of the Japan Mint Bureau

Across the river, you can see the Japan Mint Bureau (Zousen-kyoku). Famous for its spring “Cherry Blossom Viewing Path,” the Mint’s classic architecture looks equally impressive when framed by the autumn colors of the opposite bank.

The Highlight: Osaka Castle Framed by Autumn Leaves

The most iconic shot of this walk is found near Kawasaki Bridge. From this vantage point, Osaka Castle appears to rise directly out of a “hill” of colorful foliage.

Photography Tip: For the best clarity of the castle, visit in the afternoon. In the morning, the sun is behind the castle, which can lead to harsh backlighting and silhouettes.

Facilities: Benches and Restrooms

Planning a long walk requires knowing where to rest. Kema Sakuranomiya Park is well-equipped for visitors:

  • Rest Areas: Numerous benches are lined up along the riverside path, perfect for a coffee break while watching the rowing boats on the river.
  • Restrooms: Public toilets are scattered throughout the park. Based on the map, the south side (closer to Kawasaki Bridge) has a higher density of facilities.

While Kema Sakuranomiya Park is famous for its spring crowds, the autumn season is a peaceful hidden gem. Even on a Sunday, the park remains quiet enough to enjoy a leisurely stroll without the hustle and bustle of more famous maple-viewing spots.

If you are looking for a scenic, free, and relaxing way to spend an afternoon in Osaka, the “Sakura Momiji” of the Okawa River is not to be missed.
