Autumn Foliage at Hoshi no Buranko – Japan’s Largest Suspension Bridge in Hoshida Park, Osaka

Parks & Nature

As autumn deepens in Osaka, the mountains transform into a vibrant tapestry of crimson and gold. Among the many foliage spots, Hoshi no Buranko in Hoshida Park (Katano City) stands out as a must-visit destination.

In this article, I will share my personal experience hiking through the park, crossing one of Japan’s largest suspension bridges, and discovering the hidden observation deck that many visitors overlook. If you’re planning an autumn outing in Osaka, here is everything you need to know.

What is Hoshi no Buranko?

Located within the lush Hoshida Park, Hoshi no Buranko is a massive wooden suspension bridge. With a total length of 280 meters and a maximum height of 50 meters above the ground, it offers a literal “stroll through the sky.” The name translates to “Star’s Swing,” fitting for a bridge that offers such a floating sensation.

Starting the Journey: From Keihan Kisaichi Station

The journey begins at Keihan Kisaichi Station. It takes approximately 60 minutes to reach the bridge on foot. While there is a parking lot for cars, walking from the station allows you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the local hiking trails.

Exploring the Scenic Hiking Trails of Hoshida Park

1. Kawazoi no Michi (The Riverside Trail)

The initial path follows the Amano River. This river holds a special place in Japanese folklore, as it is said to be the river that separates Orihime and Hikoboshi in the Tanabata legend.

The gentle sound of water and the towering trees make this section perfect for forest bathing. Looking up at the dense canopy, you truly feel like you’ve entered a natural sanctuary.

2. Stunning Autumn Foliage Gradation

While the bridge is the main attraction, the trail itself is a masterpiece. The overlapping leaves create a magnificent watercolor-like gradation of red, orange, and yellow.

3. The Shortcut: “Bouken no Michi” (Adventure Trail)

Near the rest area (Piton no Koya), the trail splits. You have two choices:

  • The Gentle Uphill Path: A smooth 25-minute walk.
  • Bouken no Michi (Adventure Trail): A steep 15-minute staircase route.

I chose the Adventure Trail. It felt like a light mountain climb, but the 15-minute effort was worth it to get to the bridge faster!

Breathtaking Views from Hoshi no Buranko

Crossing the bridge is an unforgettable experience. As you walk toward the center, you are surrounded by a 360-degree panorama of autumn colors.

Looking down, the trees look like a thick, colorful carpet. Looking ahead, it feels as though you are walking straight into a sea of fire. For solo travelers, there are smartphone stands at the “Heart Monument” and the “Swing Bench” to help you capture the perfect selfie.

Don’t Miss This: The Secret Observation Deck

Many people cross the bridge and head back, but that is a mistake! Just 12 minutes uphill from the bridge is the Observation Deck.

From here, you can see the bridge gracefully spanning the valley with the Osaka cityscape in the distance. On a clear day, you can even spot the Tower of the Sun (Expo ’70 Commemorative Park) looking like a tiny white bean near the Ferris wheel!

Rest and Refreshments: Piton’s Cabin & Food Trucks

After your hike, stop by Piton’s Cabin. It’s the main hub of the park with restrooms, vending machines, and information.

Local Flavors
