Experiencing the “Whirlpool Cruise” Departing from Awaji Island!

Attractions

The “Naruto Whirlpools Cruise” at the southern tip of Awaji Island is one of Japan’s most dynamic natural spectacles. To make the most of your trip, it’s crucial to know when to go and how to capture the perfect moment.

In this guide, I’ll share my firsthand experience, including tips on checking the whirlpool calendar and what to expect during your 60-minute journey on the sea.

What is the Naruto Whirlpools Cruise?

Departing from Fukura Port on Awaji Island, this cruise takes you to the Naruto Strait, home to one of the world’s three major tidal currents. During the spring and autumn spring tides, you can witness giant whirlpools exceeding 20 meters in diameter.

The Ship: Nippon Maru

There are two ships: the “Kanrin Maru” and the “Nippon Maru.” I boarded the Nippon Maru this time. Both are large, stable vessels, so you don’t have to worry too much about seasickness.

Crucial Tip: Check the Whirlpool Calendar!

Whirlpools are not visible all day long. They depend entirely on the tides. To ensure you don’t miss them, check the “Whirlpool Prediction Calendar” on the official website before booking.

▲Look for time slots marked with “◎” for the best visibility.
  • Best Conditions: Spring Tides (Oshio)
  • Peak Times: Marked with “◎” on the chart
  • Weather: Clear days offer a stunning emerald-green sea contrast.

My Experience: Witnessing Nature’s Power

Once you set sail, it takes about 25 minutes to reach the Onaruto Bridge. The sea breeze is incredibly refreshing!

Passing Under the Onaruto Bridge

▲The view from directly beneath the bridge is overwhelming.

The whirlpools form right under the bridge. While the surrounding sea may look calm, the water here roils and churns loudly. It’s a spectacular sight that photos can hardly capture.

Pro Photography Tip: Use Video!

I realized that whirlpools are fleeting—they appear and disappear in just 1 or 2 seconds. If you only try to take photos, you might miss the peak moment.

Recommendation: Record in 4K video throughout the encounter. You can later extract high-quality still photos of the perfect spiral from your footage!

Post-Cruise: Souvenirs and Dining

After returning to the port, head inside “Nanairo-kan” for some local specialties.

Don’t miss the Onion Soup at the souvenir shop. It’s affordable and delicious. For a full meal, the 2nd-floor restaurant serves fresh seafood bowls caught right in the local waters.
