Spectacular Views and Gourmet Delights on Awaji Island! A Visit to the Uzunooka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall

Sightseeing in Kansai

Awaji Island is a popular destination for a day trip from Osaka. Among its many attractions, “Uzunooka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall,” located at the southern tip of the island, is the perfect place to fully enjoy local “onions” and “breathtaking views.”

In this article, I—having recently visited after experiencing the Whirlpool Cruise—will provide a detailed guide based on my actual experience, covering highlights, gourmet food, and even an unexpected pitfall when traveling by public transport. Please use this as a reference for your Awaji Island sightseeing!

What is Uzunooka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall?

Perched on a hill at the southernmost tip of Awaji Island, Uzunooka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall is a scenic complex offering panoramic views of the Naruto Strait and the Onaruto Bridge.

The facility features unique attractions themed around Awaji Island’s famous “onions,” offering various ways to enjoy your visit:

  • Photo Spots: Take commemorative photos with the giant onion sculpture, “O-Tama-Negi.”
  • Gourmet Food: Enjoy award-winning local burgers and seasonal seafood.
  • Learning: Visit the science museum to learn about the world’s largest whirlpools.
  • Shopping: Purchase exclusive onion-themed goods available only here.

The Famous Giant Sculpture: “O-Tama-Negi”

The most popular attraction in the hall is the giant onion sculpture, “O-Tama-Negi.” With a diameter of about 2 meters, its overwhelming presence has made it a symbol of Awaji Island tourism.

Behind the sculpture lies the vast blue sea—a truly spectacular view! If the weather is clear, you can see the Onaruto Bridge perfectly. Taking a photo here is a must.

Become an Onion with the “Onion Wig”!

For those who want more fun, I recommend the free rental of Onion Wigs. Wearing one of these while posing in front of “O-Tama-Negi” is the classic way to enjoy the spot.

Groups of young people and families were having a great time taking photos, but for a solo traveler like me (a middle-aged man), the hurdle was a bit high… (haha). If you’re feeling brave, please give it a try!

⚠️ Warning! Handle the wigs with care
The sign says: “If you treat the wig poorly, you will be required to purchase a year’s supply of Awaji Island onions”—a warning full of local humor (?). Please be gentle with them!

A Treasure Trove of Awaji Gourmet! Recommended Lunch & Snacks

Awajishima Burger: Awajishima Onion Kitchen

Located right next to the entrance of the memorial hall, this shop offers legendary burgers that have won 1st and 2nd place in the “National Local Burger Grand Prix.”

The cutlets, concentrated with the sweetness of Awaji onions, and the rich sauce create an unforgettable taste. It’s also great to take them to go and eat while enjoying the outdoor scenery.

Scenic Restaurant Uzunooka

On the second floor, you’ll find “Scenic Restaurant Uzunooka,” where you can enjoy a more formal lunch. The window seats offer a panoramic view of the Onaruto Bridge, making for a truly luxurious time.

The menu features plenty of dishes using seasonal Awaji Island seafood. When I visited in November, the Sawara (Spanish mackerel) and Momiji-dai (autumn sea bream) shabu-shabu were popular. The menu changes seasonally, so there’s always something new to enjoy.

Shop “Uzunokuni”: Get Your Brand-Name Onions

The shop is packed with popular onion soups and snacks. A particular highlight is the brand-name onion “Mitsutama.” As the name suggests (Mitsu means nectar), these are characterized by their honey-like sweetness.

Learn about the Whirlpools at the Whirlpool Science Museum

The “Whirlpool Science Museum” on the first floor explains the mechanism behind the Naruto whirlpools. While there is a paid zone (Uzunetarium), there are plenty of interesting exhibits available for free.

Panoramic View from the Observation Deck

The observation deck on the 3rd floor is a hidden gem. In contrast to the bustle of the first floor, you can enjoy the view in a calm atmosphere.

If you zoom in, you might even see the whirlpools forming at the foot of the Onaruto Bridge. It is recommended to check the tide tables before you visit.

The Pitfall of the Free Shuttle Bus “Uzu Loop”

For those visiting without a car, a free shuttle bus called “Uzu Loop” operates from places like Michi-no-Eki Fukura (※Trial operation until June 30, 2026).

Uzu Loop Timetable

Let me share a mistake I made. It was the “lack of frequency.” Depending on the time of day, there can be a gap of over two hours until the next bus. I ended up taking a taxi, which cost about 2,700 yen—a surprisingly painful expense.

💡 Advice
If you use the bus, check the return schedule as soon as you arrive and plan your stay accordingly. Also, on weekends and holidays, the bus stop moves to the bottom of the hill (Parking Lot 3), so be sure to factor in the extra walking time.

Conclusion: A Must-Visit Spot for Awaji Sightseeing!

Uzunooka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall is a place packed with stunning views, gourmet food, and fun experiences. Whether you stop by for a break during a drive or take your time to discover the mysteries of the whirlpools, it’s highly recommended. Be sure to visit when you’re in Awaji Island!
