Autumn Foliage Walk at Osaka Castle Park: Stunning Views of the Castle and Colored Leaves

Historical & Cultural Sites

Osaka Castle Park is one of Osaka’s most iconic landmarks, drawing visitors from around the world. While famous for its historical significance and cherry blossoms, the park transforms into a vibrant canvas of red, orange, and gold during the autumn season.

I visited the park on November 20 to capture the peak of the autumn colors. In this guide, I’ll share my favorite photography spots, hidden gems like the Japanese Garden, and practical tips to help you make the most of your autumn walk.

1. Starting Your Journey: JR Osaka Castle Park Station

For the best experience, I recommend starting your walk from JR Osaka Castle Park Station. As soon as you step out of the station, you are greeted by a stunning urban landscape.

A Scenic Detour: Osaka Castle Shinbashi

While most people turn left toward the castle, I suggest taking a quick detour to the right across the Osaka Castle Shinbashi bridge.

From here, you can overlook the Daini Neyagawa River. The riverbanks lined with autumn foliage create a peaceful, reflective scene that many tourists overlook. It’s a must-see spot for nature lovers.

2. Best Photography Spots for the Main Tower

As you approach the main castle tower (Tenshukaku), there are several spots where you can frame the historic architecture with autumn leaves.

The “Framed Castle” Shot

Located near Osaka-jo Hall, you’ll find paths where the red maple leaves perfectly frame the distant castle tower.

Photography Tip: Use a zoom lens to compress the background and make the castle appear closer to the vibrant leaves. Even with a smartphone, using the 2x or 3x zoom can create a more powerful composition.

Ginkgo Trees and Golden Paths

The park is also famous for its Ginkgo trees. Along the running course, you’ll find a “golden carpet” formed by fallen leaves. While some trees shed earlier than others, the variety ensures a beautiful view throughout late November.

3. Exploring the Castle Moats and Bridges

Don’t forget to look down! The stone walls of Osaka Castle are historic masterpieces on their own, but in autumn, they are decorated with colorful moss and creeping plants.

The Gokuraku Bridge View

From Gokuraku Bridge, you can capture a quintessentially “Osaka” scene: the traditional Gozabune sightseeing boat, the moat, the autumn trees, and the modern skyscrapers in the background.

4. The Hidden Gem: The Japanese Garden

Located within the main castle tower area, the Japanese Garden is a spot many visitors miss. This is the best place to capture the famous “Upside-Down Osaka Castle.”

Photography Tip: To get the perfect reflection, crouch down low near the water’s edge and use a standard 1x zoom. Patience is key—wait for the ripples from the wind to settle!

5. Nishinomaru Garden: A Peaceful Escape

While most of the park is free, Nishinomaru Garden requires a small admission fee (200 yen). It is well worth it for the wide-open lawns and the unobstructed views of the castle tower.

Important Note: The admission fee will increase to 300 yen starting April 1, 2026. The garden is closed on Mondays.

The garden features a mix of Zelkova and Cherry trees, offering a palette of red and yellow that frames the castle beautifully from the west.

Best Time to Visit & Access

  • Peak Season: Typically from mid-November to early December. My photos from November 20 show the colors at approximately 80% peak.
  • Nearest Stations: JR Osaka Castle Park Station, Morinomiya Station, or Tanimachi 4-chome Station.
  • Facilities: There are plenty of benches for resting and food trucks near the Sakura Gate for snacks and coffee.

Summary

Osaka Castle Park in autumn is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Kansai. Whether you are a professional photographer or just looking for a scenic stroll, the blend of samurai history and seasonal nature is truly unforgettable.

Don’t forget to explore the Japanese Garden for the reflections and Nishinomaru Garden for the best castle views! 👍
